Education and Awareness
When was the last time that we looked at the stars and asked “How” or “What” or “Why”? Do we ask the right kind of Questions about what comes our way every day? What’s our perception of value and how do values change our perception? How is it that we have an inclination to claim absolute truth based on subjective experiences and have the tendency to ignore other’s experiences which may be equally true.
So oft in theologic wars,
The disputants, I ween,
Rail on in utter ignorance
Of what each other mean,
And prate about an Elephant
Not one of them has seen!
– John Godfrey Saxe
Awareness, education, introspection and wellness are the key. The very foundations start with a good education. Expressing his views on education Swami Vivekananda has beautifully remarked: education is the manifestation of perfection already present in a man. We are lacking in providing ourselves practical and holistic knowledge, one that widens our perspectives, imaginations focusing on information-based education. We seem to be stuck in terms of innovation when there are millions of us, millions of minds, each with a unique set of thoughts, capabilities and aspirations.
Education will set us free. Though that being said and may sound corny, we cannot deny it or escape it. Education is not an accessory to life but it is a necessity. With social media and information technology providing us a multitude of possibilities, we need to channel our energies to bring in and promote value based education, and not limited to that but also the aesthetics and art of creative expression. In the words of Dr. Ajay Bharadwaj, Dev Sanskriti University, Haridwar India, The greatest gift education gives us is the knowledge of unconditional love and a set of values. These values include the simple difference between right and wrong, a belief in God, the importance of hard work and self-respect. Today we have education on every aspect of life which paves the way for the holistic development of the individual, society and the nation.
But it is equally true that education should not only be a learning concept. Fundamentally, it should be ensuring values imparted to all students and of course, value based education is very important if we want to have good citizens, for our families, for our communities, for our villages and cities, for our nations, for our world and for humanity.
We at Avgat, as a generation of “Now” have a responsibility of bringing everyone together and making cognizant of the world around us, the way it’s changing, evolving, and for good.
